<abstract>Buffer areas around non-open water wetlands at least 10 acres in size in Maine. This wetland buffer data is a part of a group of datasets developed to show areas around water bodies and wetlands that correspond approximately to state shoreland zoning standards. These buffers were developed from National Wetland Inventory 1:24000 data provided by the Maine Office of GIS. All buffer areas extend 250 feet from National Wetland Inventory 1:24000 boundaries of mapped wetlands that are at least 10 acres in size.</abstract>
<purpose>This wetland buffer data is part of a group of datasets developed as part of the Beginning with Habitat Outreach project, a cooperative effort of The Maine Natural Areas Program, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and other government and non-profit agencies in Maine. This wetland buffer data, along with datasets of buffers around rivers, ponds / lakes that are at least 10 acres in size, streams, and coastal waters are designed to illustrate the importance of riparian habitat in landscape-level planning for biodiversity at the town and multi-town level. Maps produced from this data are presented to municipalities and land trusts in an effort to encourage open-space planning efforts that include a vision for the preservation of biodiversity.
These data are for planning purposes only and should not be used as a statutory representation of the resource.</purpose>

<procdesc>All wetlands in Maine were extracted from the Maine Office of GIS NWI 1:24,000 Library of Data. Original data is organized by USGS quadrangle map so, tile boundaries between maps were dissolved. Non-open-water (where NWI attribute did not contain "UB") polygons were given a general code of "wetland", open water, upland, and 'out' polygons were given different general codes so as to be eliminated from the buffering analysis. Internal general code boundaries within wetlands were dissolved and acreages were calculated for entire wetland complexes. All non-open-water wetland complexes at least 10 acres in size were buffered 250 feet using the ArcInfo 8.1 buffer command. The wetland polygons were then removed from the buffers using a combination of the ArcInfo Identity command and selection features in ArcView 3.2a. A shapefile was created from the resulting ArcInfo coverage that represented the buffer areas only (Inside = 100).</procdesc>
