<DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><DIV><P><SPAN>Locations of rare and exmplary natural community and ecosystem types in organized towns of Maine as mapped by the Maine Natural Areas Program (MNAP), Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. Data are mapped at 1:24K or larger scale.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>
This dataset is used for status assessment, species management, and habitat conservation of rare plant species and rare and exemplary natural communities and ecosystems in Maine. This subset of data published by the Maine Natural Areas Program represents natural community and ecosystem records within organized towns for which the Maine Natural Areas Program has precise mapping information and it excludes examples of common natural community and ecosystem occurrences that are not exemplary (e.g., S4 and S5 natural community and ecosystem occurrences that are ranked C or below). Note that two large mega-ecosystems, a central hardwoods oak forest ecosystem at Mt. Agamenticus and a spruce - fir - northern hardwoods ecosystem at Mt. Desert are no longer included in this shapefile but are available as a separate shapefile. Contact MNAP for more information.

Not located despite intensive searches of historical sites and other appropriate habitat, and virtually no likelihood that it will be rediscovered. SH- Possibly Extirpated (Historical): Element occurred historically in the subnation, and there is some expectation that it may be rediscovered. Its presence may not have been verified in the past 20 years. An element would become SH without such a 20-year delay if the only known occurrences in subnation were destroyed or if it had been extensively and unsuccessfully looked for. Upon verification of an extant occurrence, SH-ranked elements would typically receive a S1 rank. The SH rank should be reserved for elements for which some effort has been made to relocate occurrences, rather than simply using this rank for all elements not known from verified extant occurrences. S1- Critically Imperiled: Critically imperiled in the subnation because of extreme rarity or because of some factor(s) making it especially vulnerable to extirpation from the subnation. Typically 5 or fewer occurrences or very few remaining individuals (<1,000). Usually more than 100 occurrences and more than 10,000 individuals. S5 - Secure: Common, widespread, and abundant in the subnation. Essentially ineradicable under present conditions. Typically with considerably more than 100 occurrences and more than 10,000 individuals. SNR - Unranked: Subnation rank not yet assessed. SU - Unrankable: Currently unrankable due to lack of information or due to substantially conflicting information about status or trends. S#S# - Range Rank: A numeric range rank (e.g., S2S3) is used to indicate the range of uncertainty about the exact status of the element. Ranges cannot skip more than one rank (e.g., SU is used rather than S1S4). SNA - Rank Not Applicable due to (a) Hybrid - Element not ranked because it represents an interspecific hybrid, not a species, (b) Exotic - element is not native to the subnation), (c) Accidental / Nonregular - Element is not regularly found in the subnation, in other words, infrequent and outside usual range, (d) Not Confidently Present - Presence has been reported, but the report is unconfirmed or doubtful; Element has been falsely reported and may or may not potentially occur, (e) No definable occurrences - Element is native and appears regularly, but lacks practical conservation concern because it is transient or occurs in a dispersed, unpredictable manner, (f) Synonym Breeding Status Qualifiers Rank Definition B - Breeding: Basic rank refers to the breeding population of the element in the subnation. N - Nonbreeding: Basic rank refers to the non-breeding population of the element in the subnation.

Those records that begin with A are for vertebrate animals, C for natural community and ecosystem types (ecosystems begin with CX), I for invertebrate animals, O for bat hibernacula, and P for plants. The second letter in the plant ELCODE refers to M (monocots), D (dicots), G (gymnosperms), or P (pterydophytes). The next three letters refer to the plant family name.
