Focus Areas are built around documented locations of rare plants, rare animals, rare and exemplary natural communities, significant wildlife habitats, and their intersection with large blocks of undeveloped habitat. Areas were considered "Candidate" if they contained: * Any occurrence of a Globally Rare Plant or Animal (G1, G2, or G3 ranked according to Natural Heritage methodology); or * Any Viable Population of a State-Rare Animal Species; or * 3 or more Viable Populations of State-Rare Plant Species; or * 'A' Ranked (very high quality) Natural Community; or * 'B' Ranked (high quality) Natural Community and a Large Habitat Block; or * 'B' Ranked Natural Community and 1 or more Significant Wildlife Resource or Candidate Significant Wildlife Resource (as identified by DIF&W). Each Focus Area is identified by a unique name which is descriptive of the general location and/or the characterizing Ecosystem or Community. Focus Area boundaries cover large swaths of landscape and sometimes may include homes, developments and even villages. It is not intended that these areas are integral to the Focus Area. The intention of the Focus Area boundary is to indicate the portion of landscape on which conservation should be considered wherever practicable. Approximately 80% of organized lands have been assessed for identification of focus areas. Focus Area boundaries are outlines representing groups of plant and animal occurrence and habitat data which are themselves indicative boundaries that have been based on USGS 1/24k quadrangle maps. The polygon areas are not intended to define edges, but rather, to group those already mapped features identified by MNAP and DIF&W.
